I am researching my family hsitory and in particular, my grandfather William John Thomas. He was born in Llangennech in 1885 and lived in Brynllwyn Terrace. His parents were Thomas born in Llanedy in 1856 and Hannah (nee Lloyd) born in Pontardawe in 1860. He had an older sister Sarah and a younger brother David. There was also a younger sister Miriam who died when she was eight years old.

I am very keen to learn any facts about the history of Llangennech in the period 1880 - 1910, and anything at all about the family. I hope to visit Llangennech in the next couple of months and would be grateful for suggestions for resources when I get there.

 Hi Tricia

Have you read the book History of Llangennech by Alwyn Charles?  I think it's out of print now but might be available in libraries, I know they have one in the Llangennech library.

If I can find any information I'll post it on here for you.

If one of your relatives is from Llanedi you might want to post on their site as well.

Regards

Gareth

Hi Tricia , it's unfortunate that you are researching the name Thomas ( as a Thomas who married a Thomas I know the difficulties well!). Have you located your family in the censuses? If you haven't got a subscription to Ancestry.Co.UK, the censuses can be seen onlineĀ at local libraries ( Llangennech library being one ). Actual censuses for Llangennech can be seen at the main library in Vaughan St Llanelli. It will also be well worth your contacting the Archive Office in Carmarthen to see what records they hold on Llangennech. For a small fee you can see the 1911 census online. Do you know what church/chapel they would have been likely to attend? There is a church in Wales and both baptist and Independent chapels in the village. Good luck!
